Activities for the general public

EGRET+ fellows have disseminated the results of their research through presentations and events targeted at the general public.

2017

  • Khaldoon Al-Nosairy [OVGU] gave a poster presentation on Color vision and visual illusion, Gokulraj Prabhakaran [OVGU] presented poster on the labs work on cortical plasticity and stability in vision disorders, and Vincenzo Pennisi [OVGU] gave a public presentation on implantable micro-sensor in Glaucoma care during the “Long Night of the Sciences”, Magdeburg, May 20th 2017
  • Jeferson Da Silva [Echodia/UCA] gave a presentation and a practical demonstration of non-invasive measurement of intracranial pressure for second-year medical students at the University of Auvergne, on March 6th and 13th, 2017
  • Sandra González Torrecilla [UCA] gave a presentation about her work to bachelor students, in the laboratory of neurosensory biophysica at UCA, 2017
  • Sandra González Torrecilla [UCA] wrote an information leaflet about her research for patients at UCA, 2017
  • Valeria Lo Faro [UMCG] gave a tour for and talk to students who want to do research, Groningen, October 2017
  • Konstantinos Pappelis [UMCG] gave a public (invited) lecture followed by an open discussion on music and medicine / medical research at the SCH General Surgery Center, Athens, September 2017
  • Philip Wagstaff [AMC] gave a demo, tour around the lab and talk for students who want to do research, September 2017
  • Iris Tigchelaar [OCU] wrote reports for her study’s participants with visual aids to help them understand their functional vision, Turku, 2017 – 2018
  • Giorgia Demaria [UMCG] explained to potential participants the reasons behind the importance of new perimetric techniques and sent updates on the results to those who participates and/or asked.

2018

  • Khaldoon Al-Nosairy [OVGU] gave a poster presentation on Color vision and visual illusion, Gokulraj Prabhakaran [OVGU] presented poster on the labs work on cortical plasticity and stability in vision disorders, Vincenzo Pennisi [OVGU] gave a public presentation on implantable micro-sensor in Glaucoma care and Jacqueline van den Bosch [IMP] presented the EYEMATE® system during the “Long Night of the Sciences”, Magdeburg, June 2nd 2018. Both Pennissi and van den Bosch also contributed to the organisation of the event
  • Jeferson Da Silva [Echodia/UCA] gave a presentation of the results obtained in the study to the participants of the experiment, in the laboratory of neurosensory biophysics of the Clermont Auvergne University, on November 15th, 2018. 
  • Sandra González Torrecilla [UCA] presented her work to students of laboratory of neurosensory biophysics at the University of Clermont-Ferrand, 2018
  • Sandra González Torrecilla [UCA] gave a presentation in the congress “Science, between reality and illusion” at the University of Clermont-Ferrand, April 6th, 2018
  • Shereif Haykal [UMCG] contributed to a talk about visual illusions and the science behind them at The Foundation for Young Scientists in Groningen, February 2018 
  • Valeria Lo Faro [UMCG] gave a tour for and talk to students who want to do research, Groningen, January 2019
  • Throughout 2018, Konstantinos Pappelis [UMCG] disseminated study results and general information about the imaging methods implemented that attracted the attention of patients/volunteers of the study upon request and by personal communication. Video from Konstantinos’ conference presentations were also posted on social media.
  • Rijul Soans [UMCG] gave a public lecture on psychophysics and functional neuroimaging at the workshop “Brain Science and Technology”, Odisha, India, 26th February 2018
  • Rijul Soans [UMCG] presented his research on eyetracking and its usefulness in the context of eye disorders to the public at the “Industry Day” event at IIT-Delhi, India, September 22nd, 2018
  • Iris Tigchelaar [OCU] made YouTube Video published by Turku University describing her PhD project at Ocusweep and promoting her abilities as a future employer in a company, December 2017/January 2018.
  • Iris Tigchelaar [OCU] mentored and collaborated with high school students on a project about sex differences on interpretations of visual illusions, Turku, Fall 2018
  • Iris Tigchelaar [OCU] wrote reports to her study’s participants, Groningen, 2018-2019
  • Iris Tigchelaar [OCU] met up with a primary school student about what a neuropsychologist does, how the brain works and how to become a neuropsychologist, Turku, fall 2018
  • Jacqueline van den Bosch [OVGU] and Vincenzo Pennissi [OVGU] contributed to the recording of an episode of the local television program ‘Hauptsache gesund’ on the Eyemate® system, Magdeburg,  November 2018.
  • Philip Wagstaff [AMC] gave a talk to technician students about his work and life in a research lab
  • Giorgia Demaria [UMCG] was interviewed by Theone Joostensz about techniques to asses the visual field. Posts were shared social media. 

2019

  • Jeferson Da Silva presented the study entitled “Développement d’outils pour le suivi non -invasif de la pression intracrânienne par des produits de distorsion acoustiques” at the public dissemination conference of doctoral projects (Journée de l’école doctorale – JED2019 – Clermont-Ferrand – France, on May 23th, 2019. 
  • Sandra González Torrecilla [UCA] presented her work to students of laboratory of neurosensory biophysics at the University of Clermont-Ferrand, 2019
  • Sandra González Torrecilla [UCA] participated in a meeting for the dissemination of her research at the spatial institute of Toulouse, April 5th, 2019
  • Iris Tigchelaar [UMCG] organized the first Groninger Glaucoom Avond. This is an information night for all participants of EGRET(+) research in Groningen. An article about this event was published . During this event, Konstantinos Pappelis [UMCG] was responsible for demonstrating novel imaging methods to glaucoma patients in the OCT workshop that took place, Shereif Haykal [UMCG] gave a talk about his research and its clinical implications, Giorgia Demaria [UMCG] have a visual field assessment demonstration (HFA), Rijul Soans [UMCG] gave a demo to the public on virtual reality and its use in visual field defects, Valeria Lo Faro [UMCG], Jacqueline van den Bosch [IMP] and Philip Wagstaff [AMC] helped out, Groningen, June 25th 2019

  • Shereif Haykal [UMCG] wrote a layperson summary of the findings of one of his publications and sent it along with a copy of the publication to all his participants, October 9th 2019 
  • Gokulraj Prabhakaran presented a poster on the labs work on cortical plasticity and stability in vision disorders to the public, Vincenzo Pennisi [OVGU] helped out the organization of the “Kopfkino” section, Jacqueline van den Bosch [IMP] informed visitors on the EYEMATE® system, Khaldoon Al-Nosairy [OvGU] helped organizing gave a demo on visual acuity testing at the “Lange Nacht der Wissenschaften” at the University Hospital in Magdeburg, May 25th 2019
  • Iris Tigchelaar [UMCG] wrote a bulletin piece for the Oogvereniging magazine, 2019  
  • Iris Tigchelaar [UMCG] contacted Lies Toren from the Glaucoom Vereniging and talked about nutrition and glaucoma – they used that information to inform patients during the Oog Cafe meeting, Groningen, 2019
  • Iris Tigchelaar [UMCG] wrote a blog about her PhD project on the Ocusweep website. The blog can be read here, Turku, September 2019
  • Sandra Gonzalez-Torrecilla  and Paul Avan [UDA, now UCA] have filed a declaration of invention on behalf of UCA submitted to SATT Grand Centre (now Clermont Auvergne Innovation), and now endorsed, regarding noninvasive intracranial pressure assessment via ear’s absorbance (one achievement of ESR10 project in EGRET+). The document is not public as it is still covered by a confidentiality agreement, patent application pending, Clermont Ferrand, 5th April 2019
  • Shereif Haykal (UMCG) presented a poster at ESNR in Oslo (NO), September 2019. Poster title: “Fixel-based analysis of visual pathway white matter in Primary Open-Angle Glaucoma”
  • Shereif Haykal (UMCG) presented a poster at EVER in Nice (FR), October 2019. Poster title: “Apparent Fiber Density of Glaucomatous Optic Nerves”
